🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail turquoise with sea-glass green scales, give the manta ray a soft slate blue back, and make the tall kelp olive and golden green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small tail scales and leaf veins, then switch to lighter side-strokes for the open water behind them. Try a pale aqua glow around the manta’s wings so the mermaid looks as if she has found a secret path through the kelp.

Between two walls of kelp, Elowen chased a silver flicker that slipped away each time she reached for it. She wanted one bright thing to bring the night-shell choir, whose songs sounded thin in the dark water. The kelp leaves rubbed together with a hush-hush sound, and cold bubbles tickled her wrists. “Wait for me,” she whispered to the flicker.

It vanished under a sleeping manta ray. Nobody looked there; mantas carried shadows, not light. But when Elowen brushed a strand of weed from the ray’s wide wing, a hidden moonbeam spilled out, soft as pearl dust. The manta woke, glided once around her, and the glow spread along its back in a shining road.

Elowen laughed so loudly the choir shells opened by themselves. Fish, crabs, and even shy snails followed the manta’s silver trail through the kelp, singing until the water trembled. Ever since, mantas carry moonpaths under their wings, ready to share when the sea grows too dim—and if you trace the bubbles beside this one, you may find where Elowen’s bright secret first slipped away.
