Every evening, Niko polished his square latch-lantern until its little heart window shone, then he walked the lantern lawn to count the rose songs before the fair opened. He wanted to keep his grandmother’s old lamp bright enough for its first festival night. Its tin handle felt cold and important in his fist.
Until one evening, the lamp went clack-clack-clack and tugged him straight under the fluttering heart flags. Because of that, Niko left the safe pebble path and ducked between tall daisies buzzing with bees. Because of that, he found Arla gripping a bouquet beside the silent prize roses, her braids tangled with leaves. “It’s pointing at your flowers,” Niko whispered.
The lantern’s heart window flashed pink. Arla held out one rose, and a tiny cricket-choir burst from the petals—chirrup, zip, zing! Niko’s knees wobbled, but he lifted the lamp high so the sound could find the whole lawn. Finally, the fair bloomed into music, and Niko knew the plain latch-lantern had been saving songs all along. If you spot its little heart window, keep watch: it may shine cold and important again.
