Along the twilight ridge, Arlen swung his empty pumpkin pail and listened for the soft clack-clack of candy stones. He wanted enough moon candy to share with every burrow before bedtime. The air smelled like dry leaves, and the bare trees scratched the sky with creaky fingers.

Then a tiny silver moon rolled out from behind a cloud and landed beside his boots. “I am too full of shine,” it whispered. Arlen opened his pail, but the moon only sighed, cool as a pebble. So he tipped up his striped hat and made a snug hollow there.

The little moon tucked itself into the hat and spilled sweet light into the pail—plink, plink, plink! Arlen laughed so softly the stars leaned closer. Ever since, gnomes wear moons on their hats when their joy is too big to keep, and if you peek at Arlen’s cap, you may spot the first one resting there.
