🎨 How to color it

Give the backpack a bright sky blue, the crayon a sunny yellow wrapper with a red tip, the ruler a warm wood tan, and the two round buttons orange. Use chunky crayons to fill the big backpack panels first, and don’t worry if little hands color over the zipper lines. For a fun back-to-school twist, make each arched stripe across the top a different rainbow color.

In the cubby room, a tiny crayon went bump-bump in Pip’s backpack. Pip peeked inside. The ruler was wiggling too, clickety-click, trying to slide away.

“Psst, stay put,” Pip whispered. But the ruler met the crayon, and they both popped up to see school. Zip! Pip made a little front pouch just for peekers. Ever since, backpacks have pockets for curious crayons and rulers. Next time you see one, shhh—can you spot who is peeking?
