Under the classroom window, Junie rolled to the art-supply garden with a tiny backpack bump-bump-bumping at her side. She wanted to give every new desk a first-day cheer, but the room was too quiet: no pencil taps, no paper swishes, only the dusty smell of chalk. Beside her, Noll the eraser whispered, “Maybe the cheer is hiding.”
They checked the flower pots, the cloud stickers, and even Noll’s soft corners. Nothing. Then Junie felt a tickle under the zigzag band around her middle. She peeled it up just a peek, and out popped three bright paper stars and a warm little laugh. The laugh bounced off the windows, filled the backpack, and spilled onto every desk. Ever since, crayons have worn wrappers with secret spaces for colors, giggles, and tiny surprises. Next time you see Junie’s band, can you guess what else is tucked inside?
