Behind the tallest kelp ribbon, Juno pressed her fins together. She had set herself a secret challenge: count every bubble before the silver-blue needlefish crossed the shells. Plip, plip, plip went the bubbles, slippery as giggles.
Juno counted three, then nine, then—oh!—a dotted starfish winked from the sand, and the round fish all drifted apart to make room. “Don’t bunch up,” whispered Juno, though her voice felt tiny. She swam into the open and pointed with her tail: left fish here, right fish there, little fish between the bubbles.
The sea grew easier to pass through, and the bubbles rose without bumping anyone’s noses. Ever since, fish schools keep little spaces between swimmers. If you spot Juno among the stripes, you might find her still counting: plip, plip, plip.
