Under the striped tents, Nixie rubbed a smooth pebble button in her pocket. She wanted to hang it on the moon-fair mask before the first drumbeat, but the button felt too plain beside the glitter paint and silver bells.
Then the sky made a tiny zzzt. Four storm sparks slipped under the tent, smelling like rain on warm stone. They circled the mask and whispered, “Name us.” Nixie’s knees tickled. She pressed the pebble to the mask’s brow and said, “Brave little thunder.”
