Axolotls are salamanders, not fish, and they are native to the lake system around Mexico City, especially Lake Xochimilco. Unlike most salamanders, they usually keep their larval features as adults, including feathery gills that stick out from the sides of the head. Scientists call this neoteny. Axolotls are famous for regeneration: they can regrow limbs, parts of the tail, and even some tissues in the heart and spinal cord. In the wild, axolotls are critically endangered because their habitat has changed and invasive species compete with them. Many pet axolotls are pale pink or white, but wild axolotls are usually darker, with mottled brown, gray, or olive coloring that helps them blend into the lake bottom.

Coloring tips

For a classic axolotl palette, use soft pink or peach for the body, rosy red or coral for the feathery gill filaments, black or dark gray for the eyes, and pale cream on the belly and toes. Wild-type axolotls look great in olive brown, charcoal gray, and speckled gold, so add tiny dots along the back with a sharp colored pencil. Because axolotls have smooth bodies and branching gills, try light circular shading on the head and tail, then use short strokes on each gill branch to make it look feathery. For a theme-specific twist, turn the background into Lake Xochimilco with green aquatic plants, dark volcanic-looking rocks, and floating chinampa garden colors above the water.
