Every dusk, Vesper counted the rings that fell from lotus leaves and named the last one before it vanished. Then she invented a game: follow only the ripple that made no sound. Because of that, she left the warm silt and drifted beneath blooms smelling faintly of rain; because of that, the silent ring widened around her, carrying smaller circles like moons. At last she touched its center and found not an answer, but another beginning, bright as the first ring at dusk.
