🎨 How to color it

Layer deep teal over the locomotive’s paisley boiler, antique gold on the cab trim and bell, brick red on the cowcatcher, and smoky lavender through the curling cloud shapes. Use sharp colored pencils and color one patterned section at a time, turning the page as needed to keep the tiny scallops, spirals, and wheel spokes crisp. For extra motion, blend the smoke from pale gray near the stack into violet and blue at the farthest curls.

The Button That Bought Steam — The canyon depot rang with iron music, couplers clacking and steam hissing like shaken soda. Read the full story →

The canyon depot rang with iron music, couplers clacking and steam hissing like shaken soda. Orin stood on the brass step with one glove closed around a dull coat button, the fare his aunt had pressed into his palm for his first ride without her. The engine’s carved boiler flashed with dust and sun; every spiral on its metal skin seemed to lean forward. He climbed aboard before his courage could step back down.

The conductor did not take tickets. She held out a velvet tray where passengers placed odd things: a thimble, a blue marble, a feather stiff with frost. Orin dropped his button among them, and it spun instead of settling. The smoke above the stack curled into the same little whorl scratched on its rim. “Ah,” the conductor said, smiling over the roar, “a wind token.”

Then Orin understood why the ride had waited. The train was not charging across the canyon; it was inviting the canyon breeze to draw it onward, pattern by pattern, wheel by wheel. Orin opened the window, let hot sage air slap his cheeks, and laughed as the button’s small spiral became the first brave turn in the steam.
