Fun facts to share while coloring

Monkeys are primates, which means they are related to apes and humans, but most monkeys have tails while apes do not. Scientists often group them as New World monkeys from Central and South America and Old World monkeys from Africa and Asia. Some New World monkeys, such as spider monkeys and howler monkeys, have prehensile tails that can help them grip branches. Monkeys spend lots of time grooming one another; it cleans fur and helps strengthen social bonds in the troop. Their menus are varied, too: many eat fruit, leaves, seeds, insects, and sometimes eggs or small animals. The tiny pygmy marmoset can fit in an adult hand, while the colorful mandrill is the largest monkey.

Coloring tips

Start with a monkey palette of cocoa brown, chestnut, tan, cream, charcoal gray, and soft pink for ears, noses, palms, and little fingers. Add banana yellow, vine brown, and layered leaf greens around the animal so the scene feels tropical. For fur, use short pencil strokes that follow the curve of the arms, legs, cheeks, and tail instead of filling every area flat; leave the muzzle and belly a shade lighter to separate them from the darker coat. Big eyes look lively with one tiny white highlight. For a monkey-specific twist, turn the page into a canopy adventure: color each vine a different green, add sunset orange behind the leaves, and draw a hidden bunch of bananas or a second monkey peeking from the branches.
