🎨 How to color it

Color the monkey’s fur golden brown, his big headphones electric blue, the music sheets pale cream, and the scattered stars lemon yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the small notes, star points, and staff lines, then switch to smoother marker fills on the headphones and belly. Try making every floating note a different bright color so the music looks like it is popping out of his homemade beat.

Above the old print shop, where warm ink smelled like licorice and drying paper whispered from clotheslines, Nico bent over two coconut shells, a ribbon of vine wire, and a button he had polished with his sleeve. He wanted to make headphones that could catch the tiny songs hiding in the city roofs. But every time he pressed them to his ears, he heard only thump, scratch, and his own disappointed breath. “One more try,” he told the button.

He lined the shells with soft fluff, drew careful circles on the sides, and tied the wire into a neat loop. Still nothing. Then a loose square of paper fluttered under his toes. Nobody had thought to look inside the quietest ear cup, not even Nico. Tucked beneath the fluff was a speckled music seed, no bigger than a sesame seed, tapping: tikka-tik, tikka-tik, warm as a heartbeat.

Nico fitted the seed into the button socket with hands that shook from pride, not hurry. The rooftop filled with silver chimes and papery rustles, and the notes slipped out where everyone could see them. Ever since, handmade songs in that loft have shown their notes in the air; if you spot the dancing monkey, see if you can find the beat that began above the old print shop.
