🎨 How to color it

Color the cookies golden brown, the baking sheet cool silver, the oven mitt cherry red with teal diamond patterns, and the mixing bowl pale blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the mitt’s small triangles and diamonds, then switch to broader, even strokes for the oven door and tray. Try shading the cookie edges slightly darker than their centers so they look warm from the oven.

The story behind this coloring page

Orlo Waits for the Click — The warmest secret in the oven was the silver click. Read the full story →

The warmest secret in the oven was the silver click. Orlo had counted every pop of butter, every cinnamon puff, every sleepy sigh from the other cookies, and still the click had not come. He wanted to be the first to hear it, so he scooted from his safe round spot toward the tray’s raised rim, where the metal felt hot as a sun-warmed sidewalk.

Halfway there, a tiny brass beetle stepped from the shadow under the oven rack, ticking with each foot. “Shh,” it whispered. “Clicks only arrive when nobody chases them.” Orlo froze. The heat pricked his sugary side, and he gave up one crumb to the rack below. Tink. The beetle tapped it like a drum, once, twice, then stopped.

Orlo scooted back to his place, quieter than flour falling. He listened past the bowl on the counter, past the spoon’s shine, past the soft hush of the oven mitt reaching in. Then—click. Not loud. Not grand. Just exactly on time. If you peek at the tray, keep the secret: Orlo heard it first by sitting still for the silver click.
