🎨 How to color it

Color the ghost pale mint, the four jack-o’-lanterns bright orange, the crescent moons buttery yellow, and the pop-art stars electric blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the skinny burst rays above the ghost, then switch to markers for the pumpkins’ broad curved sections. Try alternating hot pink and lime green inside the spiral circles so the whole border feels like it is buzzing around the ghost.

Under the crackly lights of the Midnight Midway, Zuzu floated beside the taffy booth with a pocketful of chalk nubs. She had just invented Question Burst: draw a star, ask a question, then chase the next thing that looked like an answer. “Why do pumpkins grin sideways?” she whispered, and a waxy orange face seemed to smirk wider in the caramel-smelling air.

A blue star led to a bat. The bat led to a crescent moon painted on a spinning prize wheel. The wheel clicked tick-tick-tick and stopped on a spiral, so Zuzu spun after every spiral she could find—on lollipops, paper streamers, even the curls of smoke from the kettle-corn cart.

Then the taffy booth sign blinked on: ASK ME ANYTHING, 5¢. Zuzu gasped. The midway had been playing Question Burst back at her! She added one last chalk star beneath the sign, and the pumpkins, bats, moons, and spirals seemed to lean in for the next round. If you can spot the biggest burst over Zuzu, you know exactly where her next question will run.
