All morning, Noll slid slowly down the pine trail, listening for the soft shh-shh of his skis. He wanted to see the first sparkle wake in the tracks. Snow smelled clean as mint, and his scarf waved behind him like a small flag.
The trail curled left, then right. Noll waited at each bend while flakes landed tap-tap on his hat. At last, a tiny gray hush-mouse peeked from one ski groove, whiskers silver with frost. “You made my road,” she squeaked.
Noll smiled and pushed off gently. The mouse rode the smooth line beside him, and the tracks glittered at last. Next time you see his curving ski marks, can you imagine the tiny traveler going shh-shh too?
