Under the buzz-lamps of Comic Plaza, Dax carried a blank bubble pin in his pocket and waited for it to fill with the perfect hello. His father had worn the pin while painting signs, and the smooth white oval still smelled faintly of peppermint ink. All morning, Dax stood among stomping feet, paper stars, and snapping flags while other hearts shouted jokes into the air.
“Say something already!” called a tall heart with springy shoes. Dax only rubbed the pin and listened. The plaza grew louder: pop, clap, whee! Confetti stuck to his cheeks. At last, when the noon bell made the pavement hum, the pin warmed in his palm. It did not print a word. It flashed one quick wink.
Dax winked back without thinking. Every heart nearby went quiet, then winked too, passing the tiny signal from grin to grin before anyone spoke. That is why hearts still wink first: the best hello waits its turn. If you check the crowd, you might spot the secret traveling from one face to the next under the buzz-lamps of Comic Plaza.
