🎨 How to color it

Color the mushroom caps tomato red with cream spots, the hedgehog’s spines warm chestnut, and the big curled leaves olive green. Use sharp colored pencils for the mushroom gills and hedgehog quills, pulling each stroke outward so the lines stay crisp. Try a secret glow under the caps with pale yellow shading, as if the mushrooms are hiding lantern light.

Under the tallest spotted cap, Nix tapped two pebbles together: click, clack, click. He had promised himself he would make a bell before moonrise, not borrow one from the beetles, not ask the snails, not give up. His first bell, a hollow acorn, only sneezed dust. His second, a curled leaf, flapped like a tired moth. So Nix stepped beyond his cozy patch, carrying a grass string and a pebble chip that rubbed his palm raw.

Past fern spears and damp bark, he heard snuffle-snuffle in the weeds. A hedgehog with bright eyes nosed along the trail, pushing a striped leaf before him. “That leaf hums,” Nix whispered. The hedgehog blinked, then rolled it gently toward the mushrooms. Beneath the caps, the air smelled of rain and cool earth. Nix tied the leaf to a thin root, hung the pebble inside it, and gave one careful tug.

Ting! Not loud. Not grand. But the sound shivered through the gills like a tiny star being made by hand. Nix grinned at his sore palm. Next time you spot the hedgehog by the tall caps, see if you can find the quiet bell that began with click, clack, click.
