🎨 How to color it

Color the sunflower petals golden yellow, the seed center deep brown, the broad leaves spring green, and the little bird sky blue with an orange beak. Use sharp colored pencils for the sunflower’s tiny center loops and crisscross marks, then switch to markers or broad crayon strokes for the big petals and leaves. Try a pale blue sky behind the white puffy clouds so the bird’s leaf perch feels high and breezy.

Under the whispery grass, Rue tucked a pebble beside her toes and made a secret dare: before the warm wind changed, she would sing from the tallest sunflower leaf. Not from the fence, not from the thistle, and definitely not from the safe clover dip where everything smelled like minty shade. “Just one note,” she told the pebble, which was the sort of friend who never laughed.

She hopped out. The path curled past prickly stems and nodding daisies. A grass blade snapped against her wing—tick!—and she almost turned back. Then the sunflower’s lowest leaf dipped like a green step. Rue climbed, paying for every hop with a thumping heart and one lost downy feather, until the meadow looked round and wide below her.

At the broad leaf near the top, the wind slid under her feet. Rue opened her beak. The first note came out tiny, then brighter, then so clear even the clouds seemed to pause. Next time you spot her on that leaf, keep the secret: it began under the whispery grass.
