Every evening, under the attic’s slanted rafters, Ivy measured scraps of paper beside the cedar chest and tried to make one perfect gift box. The floor smelled like pine shavings and old ribbon, and the snow tapped the small round window: tik, tik, tik. One night, the red ribbon spool rolled away from her foot and knocked against a loose floorboard. Inside the dark gap waited a tiny silver needle, tucked where nobody had thought to look.
Because of that, Ivy stitched the ribbon instead of just tying it, pulling each thread with a proud, careful squeak. Because of that, the plain box began to hold its shape like a little green house. “I made this,” she whispered, warm all the way to her webbed toes. When she stepped outside with the finished present, the snowflakes turned slowly above her hat, and if you listen to the quiet around her box, you might hear the first tik, tik, tik of snow.
