🎨 How to color it

Give the duck soft golden feathers, the cape a deep violet lining, the jack-o’-lantern a bright pumpkin orange, and the skull clasp a bone white. Use sharp colored pencils for the curling vines, bare tree branches, bat wings, and tiny stars so the thin shapes stay crisp. Try a smoky blue-to-purple night glow around the crescent moon, leaving the duck’s face bright so that scowl really pops.

The story behind this coloring page

Vesper’s Pumpkin Door — Under the crescent moon, Vesper marched through the pumpkin patch with his cape snapping like a little flag. Read the full story →

Under the crescent moon, Vesper marched through the pumpkin patch with his cape snapping like a little flag. He wanted the quickest route to the Moonfeather Parade before the clock tower rang nine. Dry leaves scratched his webbed feet, vines curled over the path, and a bat overhead made a squeaky map-sound: “Eek-eek, left!”

Vesper followed the tallest crooked tree to a huge jack-o’-lantern with a grin full of square teeth. Warm cinnamon smell drifted from its carved mouth. He tapped the pumpkin’s nose. Knock-knock. The grin swung inward, not like a pumpkin at all, but like a tiny orange door.

Inside sat three field mice polishing silver parade whistles. “Right on time,” one chirped. The pumpkin was the parade’s secret starting gate, and Vesper’s stern march was exactly the opening step they had been waiting for. He stepped out first, skull clasp shining, while the vines curled into ribbons behind him. If you spot that grinning pumpkin, you’ll know where the Moonfeather Parade begins under the crescent moon.
