Under the river pier’s blue lanterns, Sable counted his coins twice and listened to the ferry chains clink, clink, clink. He wanted one moon-mint lollipop before the boat whistle blew. The candy cart waited past the fog bell, beyond his cozy ticket crate, so he stepped into the mist and hurried along the damp boards.
Halfway there, his best boot stuck in a patch of silver mud. Schlupp! Sable tugged free, but one coin popped from his pocket and vanished between the planks. At the cart, he had just enough for the smallest plain stick. Then the wheel squeaked, and inside its hollow hub winked a trapped green glow-bug, tapping like a tiny spoon.
“Hold still,” Sable whispered. He spent his candy stick prying open the hub, and the glow-bug zipped out, warm as a nightlight. It circled the cart, flashed once, and lit a hidden drawer nobody had ever checked. Inside waited a moon-mint lollipop with a spiral bright enough for the whole ferry line. Sable carried it back, not licking, and let its glow guide three late moths to the dock. Next time you spot the spiral candy and the waiting bats, see if you can keep the secret of the quiet candy glow.
