Every day, Vera sprinted the flower-border trail, tapping each blossom with her nose to wake the morning colors. She wanted to be first to the last yellow petal before the bees began their buzzy patrol. The path smelled of wet leaves and peppery pollen, and her paws made quick pat-pat sounds in the dust.
Until one day, a heart-shaped token thumped out from under a leaf—boom, boom, boom—as warm as sun-baked clay. “Who dropped a heartbeat?” Vera whispered. A blue sky beetle zipped down and clicked, “Not dropped. Sent!” Because of that, Vera chased it through curling stems. Because of THAT, every flower she passed flashed pink, gold, pink, gold, pointing her onward.
At the trail’s end, Vera found a sleepy seed pod that would not open. She pressed the pulsing heart against it, and POP! New petals burst out like tiny flags. Next time you spot Vera holding that heart between the flowers, can you guess which blossom woke first on the flower-border trail?
