🎨 How to color it

Color the rabbits warm sandy brown, the tunnel walls soft tan, the carrot and beets bright orange and beet red, and the clover a fresh spring green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny berries, seeds, straw lines, and leafy vegetable tops, then fill the wide tunnel curves with smooth, even strokes. Try making each burrow chamber feel different: a golden nest room, a cool blue berry pantry, and a bright green clover exit.

Every evening, Vera sprinted the looping tunnels with a carrot tassel between her teeth, hoping Elder Brindle would choose her for the midnight relay. Her paws thumped so fast that straw jumped in the nursery and beet leaves shivered in the pantry air.

One day, a mole in a red scarf popped through the floor and tapped a hollow root: dum… dum… dum. “Not yet,” he said when Vera bolted ahead. Because she waited for each low drumbeat, the tunnel walls answered with tiny rattles of seed and stone. Because she followed the rattles, she found the old shortcut under the berry room just as the relay horn squeaked above the grass.

At last Vera burst out, not first from rushing, but right on time, with the tassel still crisp and sweet-smelling. If you trace the twistiest tunnel next time, can you hear the patient dum… dum… dum that carried her through?
