The most famous pirate era is often called the Golden Age of Piracy, stretching roughly from the 1650s to the 1730s across the Caribbean, the Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean. A Jolly Roger wasn’t one official flag; crews used skulls, bones, hourglasses, or skeletons to frighten merchant ships into surrendering without a fight.
