🎨 How to color it

Color the smiling octopus soft lavender, the pirate ship warm brown with cream sails, and the crescent moon pale yellow against navy-blue waves. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight spirals in the clouds, waves, and tentacles, then switch to a broader marker for the ship’s large sail panels. Try making each wave curl a little lighter at the tip, as if moonlight is sliding along the water.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Moon-Waves Curl — Under the star-swell, Fenn kept a brass thimble tucked beneath one arm. Read the full story →

Under the star-swell, Fenn kept a brass thimble tucked beneath one arm. It had been his mother’s measuring cup for sea-pearl soup, and he wanted to return it to the pirate cook before the ship sailed beyond the moon road. Above him, the water hissed and shivered. Fenn rose one bubble, then sank two, while the thimble clicked softly against his suckers.

The ship’s lanterns drifted closer, but its bow pointed toward the snaggle-reef, where black rocks scraped the sea like teeth. Fenn’s whole body went cold. He had never pushed a tentacle into open air before; the wind smelled sharp as salt and rope. “Just one reach,” he whispered. He lifted the thimble high, caught a scoop of moonlight in it, and poured the glow onto the nearest wave.

The wave curled around his tentacle like a silver ribbon. Then another curled, and another, turning the ship gently away from the reef. The cook found the thimble at dawn, shining on the deck rail. Ever since, when a small courage rises from deep water, moon-waves curl to hold it—see if you can spot the first brave curl near Fenn.
