🎨 How to color it

Color the pirate hat deep navy, the striped shirt bright red and white, the pumpkin pail orange, and the porch pumpkins golden yellow. Use chunky crayons or broad marker strokes for the big shirt stripes, porch boards, and brick wall, saving a sharp crayon tip for the tiny candies and skull badge. Try making the huge spiderweb pale silver so the orange pumpkins and red stripes pop like Halloween lanterns.

Every evening in October, Rex marched across the porch boards, boots clomp-clomp-clomping, and practiced saying, “Ahoy!” to the pumpkins. He wanted to fill his pumpkin pail before the moon touched the roof. Then he invented the Porch-Light Pirate Game: he could knock only after a porch light blinked twice.

One chilly night, the first light stayed dark. Because of that, Rex waited by the rail, smelling leaves and candle-warm pumpkin. Because of that, he heard tap-tap-tap in the big web and spotted a tiny candy clue tied to a thread. “Steady, matey,” he whispered. Finally the window flashed twice, and Rex rang the bell with a grin. Next time you see his pail, can you guess which sweet was the spider’s clue?
