🎨 How to color it

Color the humpback slate blue with pale gray belly grooves, make the Ocean Wonder boat bright white with red trim, and give the distant hills soft green slopes under a golden sun. Use sharp colored pencils for the whale’s spots, splash drops, railing, and boat lettering, then switch to broader strokes for the rolling waves and sky. Try making the closest wave curl teal at the base and sea-glass green at the tip so the whale feels like it is rising through a secret flash of water.

Before the gulls finished their first raspy calls, Pax nudged the empty shell basket with his nose. He wanted one moon-pearl to brighten the quiet calf cove before the little whales woke. The nearest pearls grew under the singing rocks, but the tide had turned glassy and strange, and every click he sent came back thin as thread.

So Pax left the warm kelp curtain and crossed the whale-watch channel, where engines hummed and waves smelled of salt, metal, and sunscreen. He dove under a white boat full of waving visitors. Its name, Ocean Wonder, trembled on the hull. Behind the painted letters, something ticked: tap-tap, pause, tap. Pax listened. The hidden sound was not a pearl. It was a trapped beacon, calling lost plankton lanterns toward the wrong shore.

“I can carry light,” Pax whispered, though nobody heard. He spent his best bubble, the round one he had saved for the calves, and blew it beneath the nameplate. The beacon slipped free in a silver fizz. Lantern plankton swirled after him, softer than moon-dust, and followed Pax home instead. Next time you see the big splash beside the cheering boat, ask which secret light Pax is bringing back from the first raspy gull calls.
