Under the gray-green hush of Fjord Cove, Quinn traced the shoreline with one low hum. He liked how the sound came back from granite shelves, soft in the deep places and bright near the pine roots. Barnacles tickled his skin when he rolled through cold ribbons of current, and the air above smelled sharp, like salt on stone. He had come to hear the cove’s exact note before the evening tide changed it.
The note returned thinner than usual, carrying a dry little tap. Quinn rose slowly, and a brown pine seed spun down through his mist, turning like a tiny wing. It landed on the water beside his eye. “You came from the trees,” he whispered, and the seed bobbed once, as if it had traveled all day to answer.
Then Quinn understood the echo was not only rock and water. The high pines had been singing too, through roots, cliff, fog, and falling seeds. He hummed again, and the cove answered in layers: stone below, needles above, whale between. Next time you see his small spout, imagine that tiny traveler turning there, and listen for the gray-green hush of Fjord Cove.
