🎨 How to color it

Color the sailboat’s hull crisp navy, the two tall sails warm ivory, the lake turquoise, and the puffy clouds pale lavender. Use long, even marker strokes on the broad sails, then switch to a sharp pencil for the thin mast lines, railings, and cabin windows. Add a sunset secret by blending peach into the lower sky behind the shore trees while keeping the sails bright against it.

By the quiet lake, a brass cleat was missing from Quinn’s dock box, and without it the summer signal flags would flap loose all afternoon. Quinn checked the rope hooks, the bait shelf, even the warm boards under the bench, where pine sap smelled sharp in the sun. Nothing. Then the old sailboat at the far mooring gave one soft clink, clink, though no one was aboard.

Quinn rowed out, palms prickling from the oars. A dragonfly skimmed the water like a blue needle. At the boat, the tall mast hummed in the breeze, and the price of reaching it was one soaked sneaker when Quinn slipped on the ladder. “You’d better be worth it,” Quinn whispered. The missing cleat was not on deck, but a round wooden plug near the mast had worked loose.

Inside the hollow mast waited the brass cleat, wrapped in a faded chart scrap. On it, someone had written: FOR THE NEXT KID WHO HEARS THE BOAT BEFORE THE WIND. Quinn fastened the cleat at home and tied the flags tight, but kept the chart scrap under one corner. Next time you see those tall sails, listen for the clink that says someone belongs by the quiet lake.
