Beyond the warm eddy, one far wave curled like a sleeping question. Neris had counted it for three tides, promising herself she would brush its white edge before moonrise. The water outside her circle felt colder and sharper; it clicked over the ridges of her patterned skin, and a loose shell scratched away one bright chip from the mark beside her fin.
She almost turned back at the sound of the deep swell folding over itself. Instead, Neris gave one small hum, not loud enough for anyone but her own bones. The wave lifted her, slow and enormous, then set her down with a rhythm she had never felt from the eddy: in, wait, rise, rest.
When she returned, the missing chip caught the moonlight like a new small window. Neris did not count the far wave anymore. She carried its in-wait-rise-rest inside her, beyond the warm eddy, where one far wave had curled like a sleeping question.
