Under the slap and boom of tidebreak reef, Quill drew a silver circle with one flipper and named his new game Current-Chase. The rules were simple: race the dark shadows under each wave, tap one with your nose, then leap before the next breaker folded over. Salt stung his eye, bubbles tickled his chin, and every shadow seemed to dare him farther. “Last shadow to the sky!” he sang, and the reef answered with crackly pops.
The game grew wild. Quill chased a skinny shadow, a hooked shadow, then three bright-edged shadows slipping together like arrows. He burst upward through the foam, expecting only sunlight and spray. Instead, a fleet of moon jellies glowed below him, their round bells turning the wave shadows into a moving map.
