Fun facts to share while coloring

Sea turtles are reptiles, so even though they live in the ocean, they must come to the surface to breathe air. There are seven living species, including green, loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback sea turtles. Leatherbacks are the largest; they can weigh hundreds of pounds and are known for eating jellyfish. Many sea turtles travel astonishing distances between feeding areas and nesting beaches, and females usually come ashore to lay eggs in sand. When hatchlings emerge, they move toward the brightest natural horizon over the water, which helps guide them to the sea.

Coloring tips

For a classic sea turtle palette, use olive green, moss green, and warm brown on the top shell, sandy yellow or cream on the underside, gray-green for the flippers, and glossy black for the eyes. Add turquoise, deep blue, and seafoam around the water, with coral pink, orange, purple, and bright seagrass green in reef scenes. The shell is the star: color each scute separately, then darken the edges and blend lighter tones toward the center to make it look rounded. Small dots or short strokes work well for the speckled skin. For a sea-turtle twist, draw a dotted migration path through the water or tiny hatchling tracks leading from a nest to the waves.
