🎨 How to color it

Color the hatchlings olive green with honey-brown shell plates, the rolling waves turquoise and seafoam, the sand pale gold, and the sunrise warm orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the many shell scutes and tiny sand dots, then switch to light side-strokes for the long sun rays and sweeping shoreline curves. Try making the hatchlings closest to the water a little cooler in color, as if the blue ocean light is already touching their flippers.

Before the sun lifted its round chin from the water, Sela tucked a flat shell chip under her front flipper and scraped across the cool sand. It was only the size of a button, but it had lined her egg bed, and it still smelled faintly of salt and warm nest. She wanted to reach the sea with it, because secrets ride better in pockets—if turtles had pockets. Behind her, the beach whispered with dozens of flippers, and ahead, the waves hissed like someone saying, hurry, hurry.

Then the sand turned tricky. Moonlight faded, gulls cried overhead, and the little ones behind Sela began to wander toward shiny puddles that were not the sea at all. Sela pressed her shell chip into the sand. It left a pale glimmer. She pressed it again, and again, making a dotted path that curved away from the puddles and down to the real foam. “This way,” she whispered, though the wind stole the words.

By the time Sela slid into the first cold splash, the chip was gone, worn into silver dust. No one thanked her; everyone was too busy tasting the ocean. But ever since that hidden gift, baby sea turtles have left shining, wavy trails behind them, so the next small traveler can read the sand and follow. Next time you see those tracks, keep Sela’s secret.
