Between the tall kelp stalks, Zuri shot forward like a green comet, carrying the first drumbeat of the Reef-Romp Festival in her flippers. Swish—she looped past silver minnows. Flash—she skimmed under curling surface waves. The water tasted of salt and wild mint from crushed kelp leaves, and every fish she passed seemed to wriggle faster.
At the sandy floor, a tiny bubble popped beside a plain bump nobody had noticed. Zuri dipped down, brushed it with one flipper, and uncovered a lavender starfish humming the very tune the festival drums were missing. “You were the music?” Zuri laughed, and the starfish pulsed warm as a lantern.
Up through the kelp she soared, calling minnows, seahorses, and shy reef crabs to follow the humming star. Soon the whole forest flickered with fins and bubbles, joy bouncing leaf to leaf. Next time you spot the star near the sand, can you hear Zuri’s first swish through the tall kelp stalks?
