Eagles are raptors, which means they hunt with powerful feet and curved talons instead of using their beaks first. The bald eagle became the national bird of the United States in 1782, and its name does not mean hairless; “bald” once meant white, matching the adult bird’s bright head and tail. Bald eagles build enormous stick nests, often adding to the same nest year after year until it can weigh hundreds of pounds. North America’s other familiar eagle is the golden eagle, named for the golden-brown feathers on the back of its neck. Eagles can see much farther than people, helping them spot fish, rabbits, or other prey from high in the air.

Coloring tips

For a classic bald eagle, use a crisp white head and tail, deep chocolate-brown body and wings, golden-yellow beak and feet, pale yellow eyes, and dark gray or black talons. A golden eagle can be built from warm browns, tan feather edges, and a honey-gold nape. Because eagle pages often have long wing feathers and fan-shaped tails, color in the direction each feather grows, then add a slightly darker line along one edge to separate the layers. Keep the hooked beak shiny by leaving a small white highlight near the curve. For a theme-specific twist, turn the sky into a dramatic migration scene with sunset oranges, stormy blues, or a river below that mirrors the eagle’s wings.
