Above the cedar bend, Sable glided low and named every splash the river made. Plink was for pebble hops. Hush was for flat water sliding under the gray rocks. When a salmon flashed up, silver and sudden, she called its leap “Sky-crumb!” and tucked the new name carefully into her chest, where the wind hummed warm against her feathers.
The game grew wider. A curl of foam became “white ribbon.” A spray that tickled her talons became “cold bells.” Sable dipped, rose, and turned with the green smell of pines below her, feeling as if the bend had saved one perfect perch of air just for her.
Then the salmon sprang again, higher than before, and slapped back with a sound like “Sa-ble.” She hovered, startled. The river had been playing too. Sable laughed once—“Your turn!”—and lifted with water shining below; next time you see the splashes around her claws, can you hear which one says her name?
