🎨 How to color it

Color the player’s jersey cherry red, her helmet icy blue, the birthday banner golden yellow, and the balloon bunches in teal, pink, and purple. Use sharp colored pencils for the netting, banner letters, and confetti, then switch to broader strokes for the jersey and rink boards. Try making the falling confetti match tiny pieces of the banner colors, as if the whole arena popped into a party swirl.

Under the bright rink lights, Zadie pressed one last strip of tape onto her homemade birthday banner. The paper smelled like markers and glue, and every letter wobbled a little because she had cut them herself with safety scissors. She had also twisted balloon strings around the rail and folded silver confetti from old skate-lace wrappers. When her teammates skated out, she wanted the birthday goal to feel made, not bought.

The puck clicked from stick to stick during warmups, fast as popping corn. Zadie tucked her craft scraps behind the net, tapped the ice twice, and took a pass near the crease. Swish—tap—clack! The puck slid in, and the crowd’s cheer rolled down like thunder in a metal bowl. Then the rink doors opened, and the zamboni driver glided out early, wearing a party hat made from a folded score sheet. “Room for one more decoration?” he called.

Behind his machine, the wet ice shone in looping trails. He had been watching Zadie’s banner and now traced giant ribbon curls across the rink, turning her taped letters and balloons into the center of a sparkling ice-made card. Zadie lifted her stick, proud down to her skate toes. Next time you spot the banner and confetti, see if you can imagine the zamboni ribbons still shining under the bright rink lights.
