Under the rink lights, Toby tapped his stick on the ice: tap, tap, tap. He wanted to make the biggest echo in the quiet arena. He crossed his spare stick with his game stick, set the puck in front, and whispered, “Ready, thunder?” The ice smelled cold and clean, like snow in a metal lunchbox.

Whack! The puck zipped away, but it did not make thunder. It made a tiny laugh: hee-hee-WHEE! A rink mouse in a red bottle-cap helmet rode on top, paws in the air. Toby laughed so hard his echo bounced bigger than any slap shot. The mouse bowed, the puck curved back, and Toby tapped tap, tap, tap again—can you spot the swoop where the joy zoomed past?
