Usually the puck wobbled into the boards with a clack, and the cold air smelled like wet mittens. “Not yet,” Jax told his toes, which wanted to zoom right away.

Until one day the ice cleaner left a shiny spiral across the rink. Because of that, Jax had to wait while the last drips froze smooth. Because of that, the waiting fans hummed a drumbeat on the boards: bum-bum, bum-bum! At last Jax pushed off, followed the silver curl, and flicked the puck so gently it whispered—then zipped into the goal.
