Before the arena lights warmed fully, Eli skated to center rink and tucked two folded paper stars beneath the lowest row of seats. He had written tiny cheers on them in blue pencil for players who might arrive tired or nervous. The ice smelled like clean cold, and his blades made a hush-hush sound as he crossed the painted circle.
Practice drifted in quietly: sticks tapped, pucks clicked, and two players bent over center ice as if listening to the rink breathe. Eli stayed near the boards, mittened hands around his own stick, wondering if anyone ever found the stars. No one clapped from the empty seats. No one called his name.
