Every evening, Willa pushed her black puck across the pond to tap the long blue crack by the pines. Scritch, scritch, tap—she loved the tiny sound in the wide, snowy quiet. Until one evening, a green glow slid under the ice and stopped right beneath her puck.
Because of that, Willa leaned close and saw a little pond fish shining like moon jelly. Because of THAT, she forgot the blue crack and followed the glow in slow circles, past curled skate lines and soft plops of snow from branches. “Where are you going?” she whispered. The fish flicked its tail toward the darkest ice, where trapped bubbles made a hidden path. At last Willa tapped her puck there instead, and the bubbles chimed ping, ping, ping under her feet. Next time you spot her puck, can you guess where the glow will wander after one more scritch, scritch, tap?
