Every day after school, Sierra raced the cone course at Northline Skills Rink, tapping her puck left-right, left-right while her ponytail snapped behind her helmet. She wanted to beat the old wall clock before Saturday’s open skate, where every kid in town would try the course. The ice smelled sharp as snow, and her stick made a quick clack-clack-clack that bounced off the glass.
Until one day, the final cone rattled when her puck brushed it. Because of that, Sierra stopped instead of celebrating. Because of that, the coach lifted the cone, and out slid a tiny silver key tied to a note: OPEN THE MUSIC BOX UNDER BENCH 7. “No way,” Sierra breathed. Inside the box was a crank, and when she turned it, the arena speakers burst into a marching tune so joyful that kids in rentals, parents in coats, and even the snack-bar worker clapped along.
Sierra forgot the clock. She waved everyone onto the ice and showed them the secret: tap, turn, share the song. Next time you spot that striped cone, you might hear her left-right, left-right starting again.
