Between the warm pots of Prickle Patch Nursery, Orlo tucked a plain white pebble into his sash and dashed down the curling path before the sun climbed too high. He wanted to reach every cactus before noon and tap each pot once with the pebble: clink for the barrel twins, clink for the tall saguaro, clink-clink for the sleepy little succulents. Dust puffed under his sandals, dry grass tickled his ankles, and the morning smelled like hot stone and minty cactus bloom.
The faster Orlo ran, the stranger the pebble sounded. On striped pots it rang bright as a tiny bell; on smooth rocks it made a soft tuk; near the rosette succulents it hummed in his palm. “You’re not just a pebble, are you?” Orlo whispered. He held it up, and sunlight flashed through a hidden stripe inside it, throwing little lines across the path like arrows. The nursery had not been waiting for water or shade. It had been waiting for someone quick enough to play its map.
Orlo followed the flashing lines in loops, zigzags, and daring hops until every cactus seemed to bob along with the beat. When he reached the center, the pebble gave one last bright clink, and all the pots answered in a cheerful ring. Next time you trace that curling path with your eyes, see if you can hear Orlo’s plain white pebble go clink for the barrel twins.
