🎨 How to color it

Try soft dove gray for the rabbit’s fur, blush pink inside the tall ears, honey brown for the woven mat, and terracotta for the plant pot. Use sharp colored pencils on the mat’s crisscross strips so the basket pattern stays crisp, then switch to gentle strokes for the rabbit’s cheeks and chest. Add a mischievous twist by making the wooden tunnel striped in two warm browns, as if it is hiding a secret game inside.

The story behind this coloring page

The sunroom smelled like warm wood and dry potting soil when Quibble set his little challenge: make Junebug the canary laugh without hopping, thumping, or squeaking. He settled on the woven mat, tucked his paws neatly, and raised one ear, then the other. Left meant “banana.” Right meant “hat.” Both ears meant “banana hat,” which was his finest joke so far.

Junebug clicked her beak from the curtain rod. Quibble tried faster signals. Left-right-left. Hat-banana-hat. The mat scratched pleasantly under his belly, and the round wooden tunnel gave a hollow little bonk each time his tail twitched against it. Still, the canary only tilted her head.

Then the potted plant beside him lifted two leaves. One leaf dipped left. One leaf dipped right. Junebug burst into a trill so fizzy it sounded like bubbles in a glass. Quibble’s ears shot straight up. “You knew the joke?” he whispered. The plant rustled both leaves: banana hat. Soon Quibble, Junebug, and the leafy comedian were sending such ridiculous silent jokes that joy had to spill somewhere. If you ever see two tall rabbit ears beside a quiet plant, check whether the leaves are trying not to laugh at a banana hat.
