🎨 How to color it

Try coral pink for the axolotl’s face and feathery gills, seafoam green for the mermaid tail, golden yellow for the starfish crown, and lavender for the swirling seaweed ribbons. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny scales, bubbles, and dotted starfish, then switch to smooth marker fills on the broad tail fins and open face. Add a secret shimmer by blending teal into purple along the tail and repeating those two colors in the little stars around her.

Under the coral observatory, Pippa rubbed her plain shell comb until it made a dry, sandy whisper. She wanted it bright enough for the Night-Tide Parade, but the comb stayed dull as old chalk. From behind the telescope coral came a tick-tick-tick: three lanternfish eggs, clear as bubbles, drifting toward the dark vents where warm water hissed.

Pippa tucked the comb into her curls and followed. The deeper she swam, the more the vents smelled like pennies and rain. A tiny voice crackled from inside the comb. “Moon-salt is for lost things, not proud ones.” Pippa paused. Nobody from the parade could see her there. She shook the comb over the eggs, and silver grains burst out, sticking to her hair in little points of light.

The eggs rolled safely into the nursery bowl. When Pippa returned, the silver grains had hardened into a star crown, and every wandering hatchling could find the observatory by its glow. Ever since, axolotl mermaids wear stars in their hair so lost little ones know which way is home—can you spot the first star Pippa kept?
