🎨 How to color it

Color the axolotl a soft blush pink, the oversized headphones navy with black-and-white checker bands, and the sweater a creamy ivory with sky-blue ribbing. Use sharp colored pencils for the sweater’s tiny knit pattern and the checkerboard bubbles, then switch to markers for the bigger head and tail areas. Try making the music notes alternate coral, teal, and gold so the sound feels like it is bouncing around the page.

Behind the velvet curtain of the music locker, Percy tapped his pencil on an empty shell badge: tick, tick, nothing. He had challenged himself to make one whole beat without borrowing a single famous tune. The trouble was, his cozy headphone nook only gave him the same soft hum. So Percy tucked the blank badge into his sweater pocket and slipped out where the hallway lights smelled faintly of warm dust and brass polish.

First he caught a click from the checker tiles under his toes. Then he paid one button from his cuff to trade the Echo Crab for a crisp clap. Last, he leaned too far over the soda-fizz fountain and got bubbles in his gills, but he caught the fizzy pop-pop-pop he needed. “Don’t tell the jukebox,” he whispered, grinning.

Back in the music locker, Percy stitched the clicks, clap, and fizz into the shell with silver thread until it pulsed against his palm. It was lumpy. It was crooked. It was his. If you spot the checkered sounds around him, you’ll know where the first tick, tick began.
