Between the reed shadows, Tavi set himself a private challenge: cross the long flat pond rock without letting one toe touch the silty sand. He had practiced the route in his head—hop to the dip, wiggle past the smooth groove, tail-swoosh at the end. The water smelled like crushed leaves, and bubbles tickled his gills as he pushed out from his cozy root nook.
Halfway across, a thin scraping sound reached him. Two snails were stuck below the rock’s steep side, their soft bodies stretched tight, their spiral shells bumping stone. Tavi knew the easy crack hidden behind the rock. It would cost him his perfect try, because the only way to show it was to slide down into the sand. “Secret path,” he whispered, and swished a little arrow with his tail.
The snails followed the crack, slow as moonlight, and reached the top. Nobody clapped. Nobody even saw, except the reeds leaning close. Tavi climbed back up with sandy toes and something better than a finished challenge: a path that belonged to three travelers now. Next time you spot those spiral shells, keep the secret between you, Tavi, and the reed shadows.
