🎨 How to color it

Color the axolotl soft coral pink, the spotted mushrooms tomato red with cream dots, the rainbows golden yellow and teal, and the little daisies sunny white with orange centers. Use sharp colored pencils for the axolotl’s feathery gills and the many paisley stripes, then fill the larger body and mushroom caps with smooth marker color. Under the warm swirls of the mushroom garden, Kip tapped his empty ceiling jar: tink, tink, tink. He wanted one sporelight before bedtime, the kind that glowed peachy-gold and made shadows dance on the mud walls. So he slipped from his cozy ribbon of moss, past daisies that smelled like wet sugar, and into the tall spotted mushrooms where the air felt cool as a pebble.

A small mushroom with a tilted cap whispered, “Not yet.” Kip nearly dropped the jar. “I can wait,” he whispered back, though his feet tingled from standing still. Bubbles rose beside him—one, two, three—slow and round, each carrying a tiny silver hum. A snail in a paisley shell crossed his toe, leaving a glassy trail, and Kip did not wiggle.

At last, the mushroom opened with a soft puff. Not one sporelight floated out, but seven, turning the jar into a quiet lantern. Kip carried it home, slower than before, because now he knew some lights arrive only when you stop chasing them.
