🎨 How to color it

Layer the axolotl in coral pink and soft peach, make the lotus petals pale rose and ivory, and give the lily leaves deep jade with olive veins. Use sharp pencils for the tiny dots, swirls, and ribbed gills, working from the axolotl’s face outward so your hand does not smudge the dense patterns. Try a cool teal wash behind the stems to make the warm axolotl and pale blossoms feel lit from within.

Every evening, under the peppery scent of lotus pollen, Vella raced the Seven-Stem Circuit before the bronze sun broke into ripples. Her challenge was simple: pass each bloom without brushing a petal. The water snapped cold along her frills; minnows clicked like castanets in the roots. Then one evening the tallest lotus bent across her route, blocking the sixth turn.

Because of that, Vella dove beneath the leaf shadows, where silt puffed soft as flour and hidden stems crossed like ladders. Because of that, she heard the canal’s true beat—fast, bright, calling from a narrow green tunnel no racer had marked. “There,” she whispered, and kicked hard.

At the final bend, the tunnel opened among petals glowing white at the edges. Vella burst through with pollen sparks spinning around her, not outside the circuit but deeper inside it, exactly where the current had wanted her. The bronze sun broke into ripples.
