🎨 How to color it

Layer the sunflower petals in marigold and golden yellow, shade the patterned seed center with umber and sienna, and give the curling vines deep olive with pale sage leaves. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny seed rings and narrow vine channels, then pull longer strokes along each petal’s vein. For a bold twist, fade the border flowers from coral at the base to apricot near the top so the central bloom feels sunlit.

At first light, Marisol hurried along the festival avenue with ink on her cuffs and dust on her boots, tracing the carved vine-scrolls that swept up every archway. Brass bells clanged from bicycle carts, coffee smelled sharp and sweet, and the great sunflower standard at the crossing turned its face as if greeting each new traveler. She had come to chart the parade route, yet every curling tendril led her farther into the music.

The crowd flowed faster: dancers in green sashes, drummers with sunflower pins, children flicking ribbons that snapped like little flags. Marisol marked left, right, loop, climb, but the avenue’s lines kept blooming into more lines, bold as waves. Then, from the sunflower’s dark center, a bright dry whisper rose—not wind, not drum, but hundreds of seeds clicking together: “You are not mapping the road. You are one of its turns.”

Marisol laughed, breathless, and folded her map into a fan. The inked curls on the paper matched the wrought-iron vines, the dancers’ steps, the bend of her own wrist. She stepped into the procession exactly where a gap opened, and the golden crowd carried her forward, with ink on her cuffs and dust on her boots.
